When it comes to bizarre headlines, Florida never disappoints. In a story that sounds like it came straight out of a comedy sketch, a 23-year-old man in Port St. Lucie tried to pay for his McDonald’s drive-thru order with a bag of weed.
A Late-Night Exchange Gone Wrong
The incident occurred around 2 a.m. when Anthony Andrew Gallagher pulled up to a McDonald’s drive-thru. Instead of offering cash or a card, he handed the fast-food worker a baggie filled with marijuana, hoping to barter for his meal. Unsurprisingly, the employee declined the unconventional payment and reported the incident to the police.
Gallagher drove off, but he wasn’t done yet. Shortly after, he returned to the same McDonald’s, unaware that the police had already been alerted to his suspicious activity. Officers were waiting when he arrived, and they quickly approached his vehicle.
Arrest and Charges
According to authorities, Gallagher’s car reeked of marijuana, and upon searching the vehicle, they discovered approximately 11 grams of cannabis. When questioned, he admitted to offering the drugs in exchange for food but claimed he was only joking.
However, police noted several signs of impairment, including slurred speech, slow and uncoordinated movements, and dilated pupils. He also appeared to have conjunctivitis, commonly known as “pink eye.” Based on their observations, officers arrested him on charges of marijuana possession and driving under the influence.
A Costly Late-Night Craving
Gallagher was taken into custody and booked into the St. Lucie County Jail. At the time of his arrest, there were no details available regarding his legal representation.
This case serves as yet another reminder that attempting to barter with illegal substances—especially at a well-lit, heavily surveilled drive-thru—is a recipe for trouble. Next time, a simple card or cash transaction would be the smarter move.
