A cat in Japan has defied all odds, surviving for a month in a scorching, abandoned apartment with no food or proper water supply. Now named Miracle, the feline endured extreme summer heat by drinking water from the toilet and scavenging for leftover scraps.
A Shocking Discovery
Animal Rescue Tanpopo, a non-profit organization dedicated to animal protection, found Miracle in a vacant flat littered with alcohol cans, trash, and spoiled food. When rescue workers arrived, they initially believed the cat was dead, lying motionless beside the toilet.
However, Chiaki Honda, the leader of the NGO, realized that Miracle had only passed out. The team rushed her to a hospital, where she received immediate medical care.
Road to Recovery
Despite her rescue, Miracle displayed aggressive behavior in the beginning, suggesting past abuse at the hands of her owner. Veterinarians suspect she may have suffered brain damage, as she exhibited symptoms like difficulty balancing and circling in place.
Adding to the cat’s ordeal, temperatures inside the apartment soared above 40°C (104°F), making survival nearly impossible without access to proper nourishment.
Owner Arrested for Abandonment
The police launched an investigation and, on February 3, arrested Miracle’s former owner, a 27-year-old woman. She later confessed to abandoning the cat when she fled the rented apartment without informing the landlord.
Japan’s Growing Issue of Animal Cruelty
Miracle’s case highlights the ongoing issue of animal abuse in Japan. According to data from the National Police Agency, 181 cases of animal cruelty were investigated in 2023. Of these:
- 97 cases involved cats, and 65 cases involved dogs—accounting for nearly 90% of all cases.
- 64 cases were for abandonment.
- 57 cases were for abuse, including neglect and unsanitary conditions.
- 41 cases involved intentional harm or killing.
Under Japan’s animal cruelty laws, individuals found guilty of abandoning or abusing a pet face up to one year in prison and fines of 1 million yen (approx. $6,700 USD or ₹5.7 lakh INR).
A New Beginning for Miracle
Despite her tragic past, Miracle is now in safe hands, receiving the care and love she desperately needed. Her survival story serves as both a testament to resilience and a stark reminder of the responsibility that comes with pet ownership.
